What are we trying to achieve in philosophy? Are the resources and methods of the discipline up to the task? Analogous questions about science have generated skepticism as to the scope of science and the epistemological status of its results. i doubt that such restrictive views are justified about science, but they may be unavoidable with respect to philosophy. How should these metaquestions affect our understanding of the nature pf the philosophical enterprise?
