2025 Provost Student Excellence Awards

Dr. Jeffrey Kaplan takes philosophy beyond the classroom

“There are millions of people out there who appreciate the kind of philosophy we teach at UNCG,” says Dr. Jeffrey Kaplan. “I just have to get it out there.”
Kaplan grew up in New Jersey and lost his mother to the 9/11 attacks. She worked in the North Tower. He traces his passion for philosophy to hard questions he wrestled with in the days and long nights afterward.
Now he reaches others who have philosophical questions of their own. And his reach extends beyond the classrooms of Curry Building.

Dr. Skillings received largest grant in Department’s history

Congratulations to Dr. Derek Skillings on being the lead investigator on a new $600,000 grant from the John Templeton Foundation for the project “The Emergence and Evolution of Goal-Directed Behavior in Collective Entities.” This is the largest grant ever received by someone in the Philosophy Department at UNCG. Dr. Kaplan wins 2024 North Carolina Governor’s Award for Excellence

Dr. Lawler Becomes Honors Faculty Fellow

Congratulations to Dr. Insa Lawler who became an Honors Faculty Fellow. These fellows are faculty members who have taught several Honors courses/sections or have supervised a substantial number of Honors course contracts for the UNCG Lloyd International Honors College.
